Role of RO Antiscalant in maintaining Industrial RO

RO antiscalant

Overview

There are numerous chemicals that we can use as antiscalant and dispersant. We mainly use them to improve the performance of RO and nanofiltration (NF) systems. Antiscalants are a type of chemical that prevents the formation and precipitation of crystallised mineral salts, which form scale. The vast majority of antiscalants are proprietary organic man-made polymers.

The ionic composition of reverse osmosis (RO) feed waters varies. As a result, if we are not using the proper antiscalant, various types of scale may deposit on the membranes. Choosing the right antiscalant and cleaning chemicals will improve operating efficiency and help to avoid RO plant failure

Our high-performance reverse osmosis (RO) antiscalants can inhibit scales even at very high saturations and work at very low doses. Our antiscalants can reduce or eliminate the need for acid dosing, allowing plants to run at higher recoveries and with fewer cleanings.

What is Antiscalant ?

Antiscalant is a water additive which we will be using in the pretreatment of reverse osmosis systems that is extremely effective in preventing membrane scaling.

In the feed water, we will be injecting an antiscalant. We’ll then run them through the system before they reach the reverse osmosis membrane. An antiscalant is injected into the feedwater that flows through the RO membrane to prevent scaling. The pores of a membrane become clogged when particles accumulate on it. RO membrane scaling is the term for this. Our Antiscalants are very effective to remove this scaling without affecting the membrane in any manner.

Calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, barium sulphate, strontium sulphate, calcium fluoride, iron, colloidal material, silica, and other organic contaminants are examples of common membrane foulants and scalants. The chemicals cause a delay in the reaction between the bicarbonate and the calcium magnesium. The delay allows water to pass through the membrane before any chemical reaction occurs, which could result in the formation of scale. As a result, scale does not form while the water is being purified by the RO.

Antiscalants for RO membranes

Reduce scale and fouling in your membrane systems. RO systems generate salt-concentrated water streams, which may cause scale or fouling. At Jateen Trading Co. we have antiscalants that are designed to eliminate scale and fouling in membrane systems regardless of the feedwater source. Standard antiscalants provide some benefit. Using our antiscalants maximises efficacy against a wide range of scale-forming substances while keeping fouling material suspended

They strive to optimise, increase productivity, reduce cleaning frequencies, and reduce costs while taking on even the most difficult water applications. To break up sulphate precipitates, calcium carbonate, and other mineral fouling, antiscalant dosing should be performed prior to reaching the RO membranes. Because of its rare effectiveness in reducing membrane fouling, antiscalant is the preferred pretreatment method for water systems. Antiscalant chemicals are mainly to process very poor quality feed water at extremely high recovery rates.  Antiscalant, when used correctly, can increase the time between membrane cleanings from a few weeks to years in some cases. RO membrane systems would not be as effective in the water treatment industry if antiscalant was not present.

Why do we use Antiscalant for RO Plant?

To address the issues associated with hard water, we have developed a comprehensive line of advanced technology antiscalant water systems. That is primarily hardness salts and scale formation in a variety of commercial, industrial, and process environments. The effectiveness of the cleaning compounds, as well as the design and operation of the cleaning equipment, are both critical to successful membrane cleaning. To achieve the best results, we recommend cleaning system design and cleaning procedures. The following are the primary advantages of using antiscalant in your RO plant:

  • They can manage effectively the scaling-causing minerals.
  • Compatible with the most widely used membranes on the market.
  • Dispose of particle dirt to keep the membrane areas clean.
  • RO systems can achieve much higher recovery rates, resulting in lower operational costs.

Wrap up

Antiscalant is a water additive that we use in the pretreatment of reverse osmosis systems that is very effective in preventing membrane scaling. An antiscalant is injected into the feed water before it enters the reverse osmosis membrane and passed through the system. The chemicals cause a delay in the reaction between the bicarbonate and the calcium magnesium. The delay allows water to pass through the membrane before any chemical reaction occurs, which could result in the formation of scale. We recommend adding an antiscalant to the RO membrane to improve efficacy against a wide range of scale-forming substances and keep fouling material in suspension.
